When the Platform Changes

If your business is built near a platform, the ground is never fully yours.

That does not make the business fragile. It means you have to keep reading the ground.

A platform can give you traffic, customers, language, and distribution. That is a gift. It is also a dependency. The editor changes. Search changes. AI gives people a faster first draft. Native features absorb problems that used to require a specialist.

None of that means your work is over.

It means your old position may be over.

When I started building around Squarespace, the opportunity was clear. People were using the platform, getting stuck, and searching for specific fixes. So I made the fixes visible. I turned the problems into products.

For years, that worked because I was close to the field. I could see where the platform stopped and the real need began.

That line keeps moving.

The fear is that the platform is making you less necessary.

But sometimes the platform is only making the shallow version of your positioning less believable.

AI has made that obvious.

More people can build the first version of a site on their own now. So the value of a designer cannot stay trapped at “I can build the page.”

The page is getting easier.

The machine can generate the layout. It can write a first draft. It can suggest the sections, arrange the blocks, and make the thing look passable faster than ever.

But the machine cannot sit across from a founder and tell them the offer is confusing.

It cannot hear the hesitation in how someone explains their work.

It cannot notice that the business keeps selling one thing while the real value lives somewhere else.

It cannot tell a client, “This is not a website problem yet. You do not know what you are trying to say.”

That is where the work moves.

Value does not disappear.

It moves upstream.

The platform handles more of the visible task. The real work shifts closer to language, strategy, taste, trust, and interpretation.

That is uncomfortable if your business is still positioned around the old difficulty.

It is also an opening.

Most clients do not only need a website. They need someone who can help them understand what they are building, why it matters, who it is for, and how it should meet the world.

A changing platform does not kill useful work.

It exposes the part of the work that was always deeper than the platform.

The old ground is moving.

Protecting the old position will keep you tied to the part the platform is learning to absorb.

The work is to follow the value upstream.
