When the Founder Outgrows the Machine

There comes a point where the business you built starts asking for a different version of you.

At first, it feels like something is wrong with the business.

The offer feels stale.

The content gets harder to write.

The thing that used to create momentum starts feeling heavy.

So you look for a tactical problem.

Maybe the page needs work.

Maybe the funnel is off.

Maybe the offer needs a new name.

Sometimes that is true.

But sometimes the business is not broken.

Sometimes the version of you that built it has reached the end of her assignment.

That is strange to admit because the old version worked.

She found the opportunity.

She solved real problems.

She built the pages.

She made the thing useful enough for people to trust it.

You do not get to dishonor her just because you outgrew her.

You also do not get to keep wearing her clothes forever.

That is where the tension lives.

The business starts asking for maturity, but you keep trying to revive hunger.

It starts asking for leadership, but you keep reaching for cleverness.

It starts asking for a cleaner relationship, but you keep treating it like the thing that has to save you.

That arrangement can only carry you so far.

At some point, the need that powered the business gets resolved.

You are not trying to prove you can make money online anymore.

You are not trying to escape the job anymore.

You are not trying to become visible enough to feel real.

The original fire did its job.

Now the question changes.

What do you build when survival is no longer the main source of energy?

That is what I have been sitting with.

SQSPThemes was never just a business to me.

It was a way out.

It was proof.

It was a place to put my curiosity, my problem-solving, and my need to build something that could stand without me touching it every day.

For a long time, that was enough.

Then the relationship changed.

The business was still there.

But I could feel myself looking at it through the eyes of the person who needed it to rescue them.

I am not that person anymore.

So the work is not only to update the business.

The work is to update the relationship.

To stop asking the old machine to produce the old feeling.

To stop confusing a change in appetite with a loss of purpose.

The next version has to be led by the person I am now.

A lot of business maturity is learning how to bless the version of you that built the thing, without letting her keep running it from the past.
